MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Summer and autumn are great times to be in Moorabool
Shire. With our fer tile soils and suitable climate, Moorabool
is one of the key food producing regions in Victoria. This is
when all the hard work during the year pays off, as now is
time to har vest.
In the western end of the Shire farmer s are star ting to dig
thousands of tonnes of potatoes out of the ground, a great
time for local employment and activity.
And the increased rainfall we have had recently will result
in great lamb and beef in the seasons to come, but more
rain is needed for our river s and dams.
Our food producers have been on show with the Har vest
Festival and Longest Lunch in Bacchus Mar sh. On page
three you will find some great pictures on both events.
This time of the year is also festival time and on pages
eight and nine you will find some of the great recent
events, as well as a preview of what is in store over the
Council has been having a number of discussions with
both State and Federal government about oppor tunities
for Moorabool. Now is the time for the community to be
putting forward their ideas and aspirations for Moorabool
so that the Councillor s can forward them on in the hope
to secure funding from the relevant levels of government.
One of the key vehicles for doing this is the Moorabool
Communities in Action program. A repor t on pages six
and seven highlights some of the activity of the past two
months as the program gets up and r unning for 2010.
It was a privilege recently to have a wonderful visit from
the Governor of Victoria and his wife , Mrs de Kretser. We
have so many qualities to be proud of within the
boundaries of our great Shire and it was an honour to be
able to show some of them off.
On behalf of all our Councillor s,
I would like to thank Rober t
Dobrzynski for the effor t
that he has put in as our
CEO. I now look forward
to the challenge of finding
the person to take us
forward from here.
Cr Pat Toohey
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
It has been a very big past couple of months in Moorabool
and we have attracted an audience the likes of which
never seen within such a shor t time in the Shire's history
- with both the Prime Minister and the Victorian Governor
including Moorabool in their official itineraries.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd turned the first sod of the
Anthony's Cutting realignment project in Februar y. Turn to
pages 12 and 13 for a repor t and images from the event
and an update on constr uction work.
In March Governor Professor David de Kretser AC spent
a day touring Moorabool Shire and visiting many of our
key assets and attractions. A repor t on the Governor's
visit can be found on page six and seven.
We recently compiled and released our Strategic Financial
Plan, which outlines projected income and expenses for
the next five years. On page four you will find a repor t on
the plan. It is a working document and Council is seeking
comment from the community.
The recent floods in Bacchus Mar sh took many people by
surprise and reminded us of Mother Nature's energy. It
also provided a great reminder of the strength of our
community. The response from residents, emergency
ser vices and Council staff was rapid and thorough.
On a per sonal note I will finish my role as Chief Executive
Officer for Moorabool Shire Council on Friday 7 May. I
have accepted the role of General Manager of Launceston
It has been my pleasure and privilege to hold this position
for the past seven and a half years. It has been a time of
many great oppor tunities and achievements for the Shire.
Some of the key challenges during my time here have
been the purchase of the Darley Secondar y campus for
the Council, the Anthony's Cutting realignment, including
the Woolpack Rd extension, and many water issues for our
irrigators and residents throughout the Shire.
Moorabool is truly a great Shire and
I will watch with interest from
across Bass Strait the undoubted
progress that develops in the
years to come.
I hope you enjoy this edition of
Moorabool Matter s.
Mr Rober t Dobrzynski
