AUSTRALIA DAY 2010
CELEBRATING WHAT'S GREAT
Crowds of people gathered at the Ballan Mechanics
Institute on Australia Day to join in this year's Australia Day
celebrations. A great morning was had by all, with plenty of
activities for people of all ages to enjoy and appreciate.
The celebrations kicked off with a community breakfast
from 8am, which was ser ved up by the Ballan Lions Club.
The Ballan Rotar y Club assisted in the day's preparation.
Local ar tists kept the crowds enter tained, while the raising
of the Austr alian flag provided attendees with an
oppor tunity to acknowledge and commemorate all that is
dear to us about our great countr y.
Moorabool's Australia Day Ambassador, John Birt, gave an
inspiring address about the Australian spirit, while Mayor,
Cr Pat Toohey, presented our Australia Day and Mayor's
Awards recipients with their awards and congratulated
them on their dedication to the community.
Eleven Moorabool residents also became Australian citizens
at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.They came from
a variety of countries including Zimbabwe, Malta and the
Citizen of the Year 2010 -- Mrs Pat Liffman
This year's Citizen of the Year is Pat Liffman, of Barrys Reef.
Pat has been a passionate and active member of many local
environmental causes, especially in around Blackwood /
Barr ys Reef.
Some of her many contributions are as follows:
• Instrumental in bringing a halt to coup logging in the
Wombat State Forest 1994-2004
• From 2004-2008 Pat ensured a weed eradication
program was put into practice
• From 2005-2008 Pat par ticipated in 'water watch',
monitoring the purity of Blackwood's water supply
• Has campaigned for the safety of her community by
insisting DSE back burn each year
• Has sought and obtained funding for Margot
Hitchcock's 'Aspects of Blackwood', published by the
Blackwood Historical Society
• Has petitioned against the sinking of illegal bores into
the aquifer of the catchment rim of the Campaspe,
Loddon, Werribee and Lerderderg Rivers.
• Represented forest issues through the Moorabool
Pat is also a founding member of the Blackwood Historical
Society and the East Wombat Forest Alliance and is a
member of the Friends of Lerderderg and Moorabool
Young Citizen of the Year 2010 - Mr Billy Smith
This year's Young Citizen of the Year is Billy Smith of Ballan.
Billy has been nominated for his very active volunteer
positions within local community organisations from a
young age and through these, has made considerable
contributions to the community.
As an active member of the CFA, Billy holds the position of
In his position as a committee member of the Ballan
Football/Netball Club, Billy takes a major role in fundraising
and organising working bees. He is also a committee
member of the Ballan Recreation Reser ve Committee of
Billy is now the Junior Football Coach of Ballan under 18's,
where after three years of dedication to his team member s
he led them to last year's Grand Final. He also actively plays
football for the Ballan Senior Football team.
Billy is also a member of the Ballan Bowling Club and has
been an integral par t of organising the 'Thursday night social
bowls' where up to 60 people par ticipate in this community
