Council is well aware of the risks for the
coming fire season and is working closely with
CFA and DSE to ensure the Shire is as secure
as possible by carrying out a fire preparation
strategy for the whole of the Shire.
Given the expected fire risk for the whole
Shire, the fire preparation and response
priority will be given to the protection of life.
Protection of proper ty will be a secondary
Council has been working closely with all
residents to prepare for the coming fire season,
especially those in townships and communities
in and around the Wombat Forest.
Council has already conducted meetings with
both DSE and CFA in developing the
Township Protection Plans, which will address
community information, specific township
planning factors and fire prevention.
The Township Protection Plans will be in
place before the coming fire danger period
and online links will be provided on both the
Council and CFA's websites.
Council officer s will also be attending all
CFA-organised Community Meeting before
and during the fire season.
Council fire prevention initiatives are well
underway in the Shire. The Compliance
Depar tment has sent a letter to all residents
of proper ties over one hectare encouraging
and advising them of the steps that they
need to take to prepare their proper ties for
the coming fire season.
Council's Compliance Officers are in the
process of inspecting every proper ty within
the Shire to ensure fire preparations are
For proper ties where no preparations have
been made, a letter will be sent to the
proper ty owner advising them of the
necessar y requirements of Council. A
follow-up inspection will be conducted 28
days later at which time if steps to clean the
proper ty have not been made , a Fire Notice
will be issued in accordance with the
Country Fire Authority Act (1958).
A fire prevention notice is a statutor y notice
issued under the Act. A fire prevention
notice will detail to the land owner or
occupier what work is required to be
performed and when the work is to be
When a land owner or occupier has been
issued with a fire prevention notice and the
requirements as stated on the notice have
not been complied with, Council will engage
a contractor to carr y out the necessary
work, as specified on the original fire
Once the work has been completed, Council
will then recover costs of the work with an
administration fee issued to the land owner
or occupier that the notice was ser ved on.
In addition, Council will issue a "Fire
Prevention Infringement" for non-compliance
with the Fire Prevention Notice.
FREE DISPOSAL OF
To assist with the community's fire
preparation activities, residents will be able
to dispose of their green waste for free at
the Bacchus Mar sh, Ballan and Gordon
The trial of free green waste disposal will run
from 3 October to 7 November 2009.
It is hoped that allowing free disposal of
green waste will encourage people to do as
much clearing as possible on their proper ties.
