Home' Moorabool Matters : Moorabool Matters Dec 2012 Contents MESSAGES
Welcome to the summer edition of Moorabool Matters.
This edition follows the recent election of a new council
for the next four years and the appointment of a new
Mayor for the next 12 months (see page 5)
Congratulations to the new Mayor Pat Toohey and new
or returned councillors in the East, Central, Woodlands
and West Moorabool Wards. The Moorabool staff and I
look forward to working with you and delivering excellent
outcomes for the communities you represent
You will find valuable information inside on the forthcoming
fire season (from page 6). The state government needs
to be commended along with your council in providing
funding to ensure that our planning for the fire danger
period is the best it can be. Fire sirens, revised fire
management plans and a trial evacuation of Blackwood are
initiatives not seen before in this Shire and I sincerely hope
they will not need to be put to the test in a wildfire.

It was an honour to speak recently at the ACTIVE8
celebration day at Bacchus Marsh College. Geva Mentor,
Nathan Hulls and Council staff provided the year 8
students with some wise words about their future; I'm
certain many of the students left inspired by their stories.
See page 13 for more about ACTIVE8.
I also pass on the Council's appreciation to Catherine
King and the federal government for providing $566,000
in funding to provide healthy lifestyle programs across the
shire for our communities. This program is being delivered
in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Services, Ballan
District Health and Care, Belgravia Leisure, Kelly Sports,
Bacchus Marsh Community Unlimited, Yakuso Healing
Centre, Shindo Karate, Melbourne Markets and Art of
Defence; and to date has been very well
I wish you a happy and safe festive season.
Chief Executive Officer
It is with great anticipation and respect for the role that I
take on the job as Mayor once again, to lead a new council
which combines experience, new ideas and the energy to
take council forward.
We have a strong team of officers in council and a
dedicated workforce to carry out the multiple tasks across
the shire that are mandated in our budget process, to be
delivered for our communities in the coming year.
We will continue to consult widely with our communities
and committees of management and to work positively
with the people of Moorabool to deliver the best possible
outcomes for the shire.
With the federal election looming we, on behalf of the
community, will advocate strongly for our priority projects
that have been set through our consultation with the
We will leave no stone unturned in our goal to receive our
fair share of funding from the government for the needs to
our growing communities into the future.
There are also major projects to be resolved that concern
our state government; such as the eastern interchange
for Bacchus Marsh, which is a high priority for the council
to be resolved, as we do not want to see the state or
federal government withdraw funding. It is important for
the Premier to deliver on outcomes for the people of
Moorabool Shire in relation to this project.
There are considerable planning issues that we are
discussing with the state government including land use
planning to meet the needs of growing communities,
potable water supply catchment areas and a review of the
We will continue our strong advocacy through the Minister
for Planning in relation to wind farms for outcomes that
protect our community's rights.
I look forward to the year ahead and
to work together as a united council to
deliver a quality future.
