BACCHUS MARSH PRIMARY
SCHOOL TRANSITION PROGRAM
In 2011 Moorabool Shire Council (Youth Services), Ballan
Primary School, Child and Family Services Moorabool and
the Highlands Local Learning and Employment Network
partnered to develop a year 6 to Year 7 Transition program.
The program was aimed at improving year 6 students'
experience of transition from small local primary (Ballan and
Coimadai) to large regional secondary schools. This year the
program ran over terms 3 and 4.
It also aims to make their transition from year 6 to 7 as
smooth as possible by providing them with a range of skills
and developing a consistent approach to the transition period;
the final outcome being the development of a transition
manual for teachers, students and parents.
Students also visit one of two partnership secondary colleges
who have offered to make themselves available to the year
6 students so that they can shadow a year 7 class for a day
and see how a real secondary school operates. While most
secondary schools run orientation days for year 6 students
these days tend take place at times when the secondary
schools do not have full student attendance and they tend
to promote the 'fun' elective classes on these days, which
doesn't give year 6 students a realistic view of secondary
The manual should be completed by early 2013 and will
have sections for students, parents and schools. The students
receive a 'Hints and Tips' handbook which covers topics such
as who to seek help from in their new school, how to create
a study timetable and time management techniques.
This program has been funded by the Highlands Local
Learning and Employment Network.
Any school wanting copies of the final draft version of the
manual can simply contact Moorabool Shire Council -- Youth
Services for an electronic copy and we would welcome any
views, thoughts or suggestions.
