16 MOORABOOL MATTERS - COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2012
There is an exciting exhibition showing at the Lerderderg
Library Arena area until January 4 called 'We Saw the Queen.'
This bright and cheery exhibition draws upon the archives
of the Public Records Office Victoria who have put the
information together to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen
Elizabeth II. It details the different tours Her Majesty took
around the state of Victoria, and highlights the energy and
effort Victorians put in to preparing for these tours. There are
personal accounts of meeting the Queen, beautiful photos of
Victorian landmarks and photos of smiling people wearing the
fashion of the time of her visits.
The title of the exhibition comes from the heading of a
scrapbook created by students at Maribyrnong Primary school
in 1980 after they went to greet the Queen at the airport on
Visitor to the library, Graham Greene saw the exhibition and
commented 'I remember as a boy standing with my brother
on the side of the street in Ballarat, waving the Australian flag
as the queen drove past.' The exhibition will run at the same
time as the Historical Society presents 'Our Local Champions'
in the MoorArt Space, which documents the achievements of
remarkable people from Moorabool Shires past and present.
BALLAN LIBRARY; NOW OPEN!
The official launch of the Ballan Library & Rural Library Service
took place in September at the Ballan Mechanics Institute.
The event was funded by the Library and the Best Start
partnership. Best Start is a prevention and early intervention
program that aims to improve the health, development,
learning and well-being of children aged 0-8 years in
Moorabool Shire. A group of community agencies meet
monthly to discuss the needs of families and children in the
Shire to ensure parents receive appropriate parenting support
and children receive the best start in life they possibly can.
Literacy development, including increased visits to the library,
is part of Best Start's focus.
This was an opportunity for local people to see the facilities
now available through the expanded library service, in a
building that was originally the first library in Ballan.
The Ballan Lions Club and the Bacchus Marsh Country
Women's Association provided catering on the day and
the Wombat Arts Network created an art instillation to
commemorate the launch.
The Library at Ballan is open Wednesday 9:30am -1:00pm
and Saturday 1:30pm-5:00pm. See the Council website for
